On my recent motorcycle trip from the midwest to the Pacific coast (http://www.dynaroadtrip.blogspot.com/) I passed through a number of states that did not require a helmet. Even though at time it might have been more fun to go without, I kept it on.
I have worn a helmet since I started riding in 1975 and I support the freedom to not wear one. If you choose to be an organ donor, why should I care? Apart from individual compassion, is there a compelling public benefit to limit the freedom to choose?
Once the government runs health care, there WILL be a compelling public benefit to control EVERY behaviour that a government official deems unsafe. Think the nanny state is bad now? Just wait until the government takes over health care. Like french fries? Would you like to pay a $2.00 health tax for the privilege?
A better solution? Pay for your own care and if you want to engage in risky behaviour like riding bareheaded or casual unprotected sex, you bear the consequences of your choices. If that means that you impoverish your family to pay for your funeral or hospice care, so be it. Maybe someone else will learn from your bad example. That may sound heartless to some here but if you relieve someone of the consequences of their behaviours, will they ever grow up?
